Michael as a speaker on work happiness

From work pressure to work happiness

Michael has worked for many different government agencies and companies and gained insight into what is needed and what adjustments can be made; both for employees and at tactical and strategic levels.

‘I don’t want to know how busy you’ve been, but what you’ve delivered!’

This is quite a results-oriented statement and of course it’s not just about being productive, but the essence of this statement is very apt if you want to know more about work happiness.

Working long days is NOT cool. Often it means you don’t have things in order.

Too often people confuse:

  • Being busy with being productive
  • Working hard with being successful
  • Being present in every meeting with actually adding value
  • Long meetings with making effective decisions
  • A full inbox with clear communication
  • Coming home tired every day with being passionate about the cause
  • Effort with actual effect

Work smart > work hard: Focus on impact, not on busyness.

BIG 5 AS A SPEAKER ON WORK HAPPINESS

1. Energy management of employees

Balance between Performance Recovery is the key here.

Without relaxation, no exertion or from a top sports perspective; you train to recover! So make sure to recover, otherwise the quality and thus the training efficiency will decrease.

The model below is not rocket science but one where a lot of progress can be made within many teams and companies.

Too little time is spent in the bottom right quadrant in particular.

The consequence is that Performance energy decreases and people and teams end up in the survival zone (even sooner). The negative spiral is that more and more time is spent in the Survival zone and people eventually get stuck there or end up in the Burn-Out zone.

2. Energy management of the manager

The team leader or manager also needs knowledge and skills in this area.

Work and organizational psychologist Prof. Dr. Schaufeli demonstrated years ago that energy is literally contagious. If a team leader can maintain balance between Performance and Recovery and thus perform sustainably, there’s a good chance the whole team will be pulled along. The reverse is certainly also the case.

3. In the flow

You’ve probably heard of Flow, but what exactly is it?

It’s essentially a state in which one is (pleasantly) concentrated on work. You can recognize flow when time flies and everything seems to succeed. So you’re figuratively riding a wave.

In the Yerkes Dodson model, this is represented as the ‘Ideal Performance State’.

So you can have too much tension, but also too little. When people think of stress, they often think of too much tension, but you can also have under-tension. That ultimately also causes stress or rather stress signals.

With under-tension, one needs to ‘plus’ (e.g., by making something important) and with over-tension, one needs to ‘minus’, e.g., through breathing exercises or setting a more realistic goal.

Being busy with things without them really mattering

4. Effective over efficient

This is usually the moment where I, as a speaker or coach on work happiness, can get ‘interference’ with people who give time management or strive for improved time management. The problem is often that they want to do more things in less time.

Of course, there is such a thing as inefficient work, but look at the picture below and think about how you do this… It has to do with an attitude that people have taught themselves. Working, action, being busy, etc. … continuously, all day long! And that becomes normal much faster than you think.

If you have taught yourself this, this Corona time can be hard on you. Either you suddenly have little to do and find it difficult to motivate yourself, or you’re drowning in all sorts of things that aren’t really important. The Eisenhower matrix can give us a nice insight here (see image). You can easily be busy with things without them really mattering. Especially now that many people are working from home. Those who often want to do everything can recognize themselves best here.

Many people get inspiration from an external source

5. Priority = singular, priorities doesn’t exist!

Back in the day… you couldn’t find the word ‘priorities’ in the Dutch dictionary, only the word ‘priority’. Nowadays you find the word ‘priorities’ everywhere and its meaning.

The word in singular form less and less. What I often hear is that people or teams have, for example, 13 priorities. Then I, as a speaker on leadership, work happiness and mental resilience, am often curious where they start and what’s really important.

For a few years now, I’ve been sharing my ‘to-do list’ a few times a week with friend and fellow speaker @kevinweijers.nl

What have we agreed?

In the morning (or the evening before) we share our top 3 for the day. A priority, two important things and a bonus for our recovery. At the end of the day we share the top 3 again, now with succeeded โœ…, working on it / continue tomorrow ๐Ÿ”ถ, not done or postponed โ›”๏ธ

The following can be an example:

  1. Finish and send proposal to client X โœ…
  2. Attend Zoom webinar โ›”๏ธ
  3. Write LinkedIn post ๐Ÿ”ถ

Bonus: (CrossFit) workout โœ…

What works well here is that you’re forced to think about your actions that will make the difference the next day and you’re already building in a recovery moment for yourself.

It might sound strange, but if you do this more often, you’ll experience that your day can’t go wrong anymore when you’ve checked off the list. Whatever else you achieve during the rest of the day is a bonus. You can also focus better on your recovery moments such as walking, meditation, family or a good workout.

Why is this insight so important right now?

Due to the circumstances, many people’s work-lifestyle has changed. The boundary between work and private life can quickly blur. It helps us to think about what makes the difference in a day and create more awareness of this. Whether you want to move forward or ‘just’ deal with the current situation.

Moral of the story:

Sometimes it’s just enough, learn to be content and enjoy the day. Not just in these times!

Do things 100% more often; work hard, play hard … rest hard.

About Speaker Michael Kortekaas

‘Just’ doing is the key to change

As a leadership speaker, workplace happiness speaker and mental resilience speaker, it’s one of his frequently used expressions; ‘what you do is what you become good at’ encapsulates the essence of a session. If you complain and grumble a lot, you’ll become good at that! But if you learn to deal with fear, disappointment or setbacks, for example, you develop willpower and perseverance.

It’s paradoxical, but ‘just’ doing is one of the great keys to real change. The trick is simply to start…
